The Berlin Project Room EPW:O was generated during a stay of John Nixon in Berlin. Experimental Painting Workshop (EPW:O) is the name of his project about interrogation of non-representational painting. Nixons references are Malewich’s Black Square and Duchamp’s ready-mades. Nixon experiences their possibilities and evolves them in a dialogue with other protagonists of the modern spirit, like El Lissitzky, Piero Manzoni as well as the minimalists. The engagement with them he applies like an experimental series of an empirical research-project. Staged as a labor, the Berlin Project Room reveals Nixon’s methods of analysis of the modern abstract art and informs us about his continuation of the ‘project of modernity’.
