Michel Verjux
Ouverture intérieure, 2011

In the early eighties, when coming to terms with the fundamental ar-tistic themes and strategies of artists like Daniel Buren, Niele Toroni or Dan Graham, the former performance artist, lyricist, actor and philosopher Michel Verjux continued to minimize his vocabulary, and finally brought it down to a last, irreducible core, the circle of light. Vertical bars of light and squares of light also occur alongside this circle of light that dominates his work; and for Verjux one thing ap-plies to all these areas of light, projected with a powerful halogen spot: they are nothing other than “signes d’exposition”, “exhibition signs”, “acts of showing” (“actes de montrer”), drained of sense and meaning. Verjux states that action, concretion and reception are the correct terms for his “exhibition signs”: “light in action within a concrete situation, in terms of time and space, and witnessed by one or more spectators”.
