Katja Strunz
Untitled, 2002

Examining Robert Smithson’s work Untitled, 1964-65 from the Crystal Structures series, was the moment in the mid 1990s that triggered the series of works with folds that have become typical of Katja Strunz’s work. The reflective surfaces of Smithson’s crystal-shaped sculpture in steel and acrylic glass reflect the surrounding area and their own structures into infinity. After studying this work, Katja Strunz started to make prism-like, angular wall objects such as the 2002 Untitled works. But Strunz does not use mirror cladding in her work, to avoid reflections. Displaced corners that come together to form tilted pyramidal structures or areas compressed like a concertina are typical of her wall objects in materials such as stained wood or steel.
