Sean Scully
Red Night, 1997

Sean Scully’s œuvre can be seen as located between American painting of the 1950s and the pictorial concept of the ›Neo Geo‹ movement that became known with artists like Peter Halley. Influenced by works of Mark Rothko, Bridget Riley, Frank Stella and Agnes Martin Scully has developed a vocabulary of geometric forms with which he again tried to link up with a subjective painterly expression. His colored rows and stacked bars – although clearly structured – are characterized by a painting manner that refers to a ‘free’ hand working without technical support and evolves ‘smooth’ borderlines between the single color fields. In doing so, Scully turned his back on for him seemingly rigid and mechanical-like works of Minimal Art. Instead he undertakes to give the inner, mental and spiritual activity of the human being a new pictorial expression: “The architecture of our spirituality is in ruins… But I believe with elemental forms painted from deep within the self, it is possible to make something empathetic that addresses the architecture of our spirituality.” (Sean Scully, 1995)
